Welcome to our blog!

Hello, all ISK freshmen! This class blog will give us a space to reflect on our personal reading and to share our thoughts about books. Make sure you make one post a month about what are reading for fun and what you like about it. Sometimes I (Mrs. Lav.!) will also post prompts and questions about what we are discussing in class, and sometimes you will need to post something in response to a prompt you are given. Happy reading, everyone! :)

  1. My first hero is my really good friend Brian. Brian is my hero as he is a true survivor as he has survived cancer. I think that he is a hero as he can be looked up to and he has a quality that not many people have. Brian can be calm through out anything and everything he gows through. When he is calm he gives off that same mood to the people around him. Being a hero also means facing every challenge that comes in your way and Brian has certainly done that. He battles with every trial and manages to be victorious in the end. Brian fights mentally and physically every day and with that he is a true hero.

My other hero is Anne Frank. I really admire her as she was a brave girl during the most difficult times in history. Living life cautiously everyday has to effect one mentally and must change their personality a lot. In her diary, Anne Frank is very positive and looked to the positive side yet she still did not loose touch with reality which i think is a very hard thing to do. Anne Frank however did not live to achieve her boon yet i know she is a hero all over the world.

  2. Gilgamesh.

A mythical novel is a book full of thought provoking and traditional ideas that are most intruiging. Gilgamesh being a mythical novel is not realistic so the reader really needs to stretch their imagination. This allows the characters to introduce a new world. This epic is also appealing to most ages as the language is in modern english. At the same time this book's moral is extremely old. The legendary moral and story of Gilgamesh is being appreciated everywhere.

  3. The book i have just finished reading is The Book Theif by Markus Zusak. This book is about a german girl Leisel, living in 1939, Nazi Germany with her foster father as they discover books of all sorts and come across many dangers in doing so. I love this book as it has the mix of historical evidence and an intruiging twist of fiction. I think it is extremely difficult to do this. In my opinion Zusak does this very well. The scenes and setting are brought to life and i could not stop reading this novel! I love the characters and the sudden switch in plot and i would recommend this book to anyone who loves to read!!

  5. The book that I read is called A Friend like Henry by Nuala Gardner and it is based on a true story.
It is a book about a boy called Dale who has Autism and how a Golden Retriever is able to rescue him and helps him to come back from his illness. Henry is chosen by the boy’s parents when he is a gorgeous golden puppy and intended as a family pet. Dale has a very special relationship with the dog and his parents realise this may be the way of getting through to Dale. Dale’s parents Naula and Jamie really work very hard to try and help Dale deal with this awful condition. In a Friend Like Henry the dog Henry really shows how animals can make a impact on people’s lives and help them make a change for the better. Dale is able to move from being shut out of most things to growing into an adult who is well adjusted. This book also explains a lot about Autism and what it is really like to live in a home where someone has this condition. It is sad to see how much his family also suffered because of what Dale had to go through and especially his mother who refused to accept that nothing could be done for her son.
The parents work with Henry to get through to Dale as his autism is severe and he is not able to even attend a mainstream school. Henry is a Golden Retriever, which is one of my favourite breeds. This is part of the reason that I enjoyed the book is because I have a Labrador who reminds me of Henry. Many of Henry’s character traits and behaviours are similar to my own dog who is also very intelligent and playful. This is a fantastic book and anyone that loves dogs should read it.

  7. I have been reading the book ALEX and THE WIGPOWDER TREASURE. It is a really good book and talks about the story of Alex who lives with her grandfather because he is the only one in her family. The story starts when Alex goes to her first session of that year. She was thinking of something and then she collapses with a new history teacher. Then they both say sorry to each other and the teacher asks her to show the way to a room. Later on in the story they both become very good friends as well as her grandfather. Then suddenly one day some people set the teachers house on fire and the whole place burns down. Fortunately her teacher was outside waking. After listning to what happened Ale invites her teacher to stay over until the new house is made. Then Alex asks who could have it been and the teacher says that it could have been the pirates who want the treasure. Then one day when no one was in the house exept her grandfather he was killed and the teacher was taken away. The whole story talks about the finding of the WIGPOWDER TREASURE. It is a very nice story and tells what limits can a girl cross for her teacher. It also is a mystery fiction and that was one of the reasons I chose to read this book. This book also has magic and lots of weird creatures. So if you like these types of things this book is for you. I would recommend this book to every person 13+ because it is a bit confusing.

  8. The book that i just completed is a book called Generation Dead by Micheal Waters. The book is about a college in which teenagers are dying but then coming back to life as the living dead or what we know as zombies.
The book goes on with a main character, a girl named Phoebe and her two close friends Adam and Macy.Another girl who was their friend,Colette died and has come back as the living dead...this is where the story starts.
The living dead/zombies are populating a lot of the school and the living people don't like it and so a living dead boy by the name of Tommy decides to change their view and he goes out onto the field to play football.
As the story continues about how the world does not appreciate the living dead populating their town,Phoebe talks to Tommy and she starts to notice that maybe they aren't so bad, maybe they are that same as the living....maybe even better, its just that we make them look bad...and so Phoebe,Adam,Tommy and a few others join a group to make the living dead equal with rights as the living people have.
This book is a book that you really have to look deep into to understand. It has a lot of small little meanings hidden under one big meaning. There are stories of friendship, love, pressure, but under all that, the main meaning of the book is do not judge people by how they look.Get to know them before you decide if you like them or not...This a big theme in today's life in general as well and i think that it is a very important theme.
Overall, i loved the book because i enjoyed the way the messages were sent out and how you could understand a perspective from a different characters view each time. This would definitely be A book i would recommend..:D
