When we talked about modern day heroes today in class, we created the following criteria for what it means to be a hero in 2010. A hero, according to our collective wisdom, should be: brave, bold, well-spoken, knowledgeable/wise, humble, persistent, swift (to act and speak and think), determined, a leader, calm, decisive, trustworthy, helpful, honest, selfless (and ready to sacrifice one's self for others), confident, a truth seeker, compassionate, strong, courageous, clever/witty and steadfast. Some additional criteria, according to fringe elements in our group, are: being able to fly, likes food, can teleport, has superpowers, is good-looking and funny.
Now, think about two people you consider to be heroes. The first person needs to be a contemporary or historic figure (a real person) you admire. The second person needs to be someone you know personally. Please post a reply to this post that summarizes who these people are and why you think they are heroic. Aim for 300 words.
You may need to set up an account with blogger.com in order to post a reply. It's really easy to do. Just follow the prompts you are given and you should be fine. If you run into any problems, email me. :)
My first hero who is a famous person would have to be the musician Trevor hall. He stands by his own morals 100% and does not seem to give into anything to do with his music just for money. His music is gentle and beautiful, and it seems to be a represent his personality as well. He is a hero and can change peoples view points or at least make people think, he does this without force or with any political or religious powers he just plays his guitar and sings. I think that in the 21st century this is a real hero. Someone who can change things, avoiding conflict.
ReplyDeleteMy second hero who is someone i know personally would be my grandpa. He raised 8 children and has been someone ive looked up to all my life. He is a writer, a great poker player, and a wonderful story teller. He has patiencs and is extremely humble about his accomplishments. He has lived a long and seemingly fullfiling life, he fought in the Korean war, published a book, and has a wife, he is very brave and is always commited to what he does, that is why he is my hero.

My First Hero is someone that is very famous and everyone around the world knows him his name, Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela was born in on July 18, the same date as my sister. He recently celebrated his 92nd birthday and I was in South Africa at the time. Nelson Mandela really changed South Africa's future and influenced millions of people across the world. He is a very special person for making such a major change in a country with huge social problems. I have South African blood in me and he is really a hero to me and many other young South Africans. He was in jail for 27 years for trying to go against the apartheid system. When I was in South Africa for the World Cup, South Africans were so proud of what was achieved and Nelson Mandela is a big reason we got there.
ReplyDeleteMy second hero is some one that I know personally, his name is Ludokoiwi Ekoel. He is a Kenya from Turkana in the North of Kenya. He is my hero because he has been through some of the hardest suffering and yet he is a positive and kind man. Last year over 500 of his cattle were stolen by people from Baringo. They killed his brother and his brothers kid's. It is so terrible this happened and yet incredibly he does not retaliate to the people who stole all his livestock. He now works here with our family as the security guard. He is trying to raise two kids and support his extended family which is very hard for him as he does not even speak English and has never been to school. He is one of the reasons I speak Swahili as he is such an interesting man and I learn so much from him. I really admire so many Kenyans who struggle terribly but are such good people.
These two heros will always be special to me.
The famous person who I think of as a hero is Barrack Obama because he is the first black president of the United States which showed the people that racism was no longer a big problem in the United States and that people of any ethnicity can be leaders. Also since he was raised in a home with a single mother under a normal income he showed people that anyone even the common child can become a leader or whatever they set their mind on. This is what the American dream is all about, and he showed everyone that it is still attainable. Barrack Obama is a hero in my eyes because he represents hope to me.
ReplyDeleteA personal hero for me is Danny Leonetti, my grandmother’s cousin. When he was young he was drafted to go to Vietnam for the Vietnam War, but he did not believe in war and especially not in the Vietnam War. Some people might have thought of him as a traitor to the United States, but I think of him as a hero because he stood up for what he believed in. I think that history has proven him correct since I have lived in Vietnam and seen that the war not good for any one. He went to England and then Sweden to get away from a war he did not believe in war.

ReplyDeleteThere are many people who I would consider to be very heroic but Mohandas Gandhi is one person that really stands out. I have always thought of him as a hero for many reasons. Firstly he helped India gain their independence. Gandhi used non- violent protests and influenced others to not use violence to get revenge. During the time Hindu’s and Muslims really hated each other, Gandhi managed to unite them. I think that Gandhi must have been very courageous to do such a thing because he was risking his own life to unite the Muslims and the Hindus. Gandhi’s peaceful protest could have cost him his own life but he was not worried as he only looked at the future of India. What I admire about Gandhi is how he can remain calm and not use any violence in very difficult situations. I also admire the fact that he was able to unite both Muslims and Hindus.
ReplyDeleteIn my own life there have been many people who have been heroic for many different reasons. One person that I will always think to be a hero would be Mohamed S, a scout leader. 5 years ago when my brother and I went rock climbing with a group of scouts he, Mohamed really helped my brother out. I had reached the top of the rock face when my brother began to climb. When my brother was almost at the top he grazed his knee quite badly and couldn't move. Mohamed climbed up the rock face without any support and went up to help my brother. He helped my brother up to the top of the rock face. I found this very heroic because he was brave and courageous to climb all the way up the rock face without any support to help someone. I think that Mohamed was very brave to do such a thing because if he had fallen he would have been very badly injured or possibly worse.
My first hero is a man that has inspired thousands the world over, Barack Obama. Barack underwent trials and tribulations his entire life, but in politics it was much worse. He was the first man of ethnicity to be huge in American politics. Through the fact that he is not African-American or Caucasian but both means that he may show the best from both. It has not always been that way in the world because most people of our skin color were discriminated against by both of the other ethnicities. Even with all of this hatred against him, he picked his head up and kept moving forward until he became the president. Barack has gone to the top and he is an inspiration to all that might feel rejected by society, he shows there is hope to move on in the world. All I can say is Obama 2012!
ReplyDeleteWhen choosing the hero I personally know, I wanted to choose myself. But I realized, though I could go on about myself for 4 or 5 hours I know there are morals and traits I would like that I currently do not possess. My Hero that I know on a personal basis would have to be my dad. In his life he has not endured many terrible hardships but the ones that he has gone through have made him the greatest man I know. In any case my dad has 3 personality traits I would love to own when I am older, such as being a great father, an incredibly giving and charitable person and of course as a banker he is good with money. All in all I love my father which makes him a hero.
These two men are the figures that have influenced my teenage life more than any other, which is (now that I’ve thought about it) the most important trait a hero needs in the 21st century.
My hero is Imran khan. He was an international cricket player. He played for Pakistan for two decades. He was a captain and after retirement, he was called back and then leaded the team to Pakistan’s world cup victory. After cricket he became a politician. He founded and is the chairmen for the movement for justice. He is also a member of the national assembly. Imran khan established Pakistan’s first cancer Hospital which he named after his mother. The hospital is called Shaukat Khanum cancer hospital and research center. He also funded 25$ million to charity. Imran khan is my hero because he is a great cricketer and he donates a lot to charity. I love cricket and I play it a lot. I watch a lot of the games and I’m glad he won us the world cup. He also build the cancer hospital and I think that has benefited a lot of people. In addition to his cricket career he has made367 wicket s which is a like home run. I think that to someone who understands that is a lot and it’s kind of cool. Imran Khan is 57 and lives in Pakistan. I like to help people and do charity stuff and I am sort of glad we get community service. And that’s why he’s my hero.
ReplyDeleteMy personal hero is my Dad. His name is Mohammad Amir Khan and he’s 47. He likes really boring old music. He’s really cool and he’s always happy. He isn’t afraid of asking questions which is something I would like to posses. He’s always chilled about everything. I think that my dad is a great person. He’s also a great chef and makes awesome chicken. I love my dad and I look up at him for these things and a lot more.
From Liz,
ReplyDeleteMy first and foremost hero would have to be my mom (rest in peace). She was not only a mom, but my best friend, my sister, my everything. She was everything a hero should be.
She was extremely selfless. For example, if there were three peices of pie and four people, she would always lie and say she never really did care for pie anyway. Any chance she got, she would give. She was a member of dozens of organizations that were focused to giving, and in her free time she did so much more.
She was the dictionary definition of a mom. She was extremely caring, and brave. She went through so many things in her life and yet came out stronger and happier. She had to leave her biological family at 9 years old and was shuffled around Mali a lot since then. Despite the odds, and the many people who were trying to bring her down, she refused to just sit back and let her life fall to pits and decided to be the top of her class and make something out of herself.
She sacrificed everything to make mine and my brother's lives amazing and she should even have her own holiday for that.
Now, my "social hero". That would have to be Robin Hood. It's funny, because there's a lot of debate on whether he was or wasn't a here. Some people say he was because he helped the poor. Some people say he wasn't because he stole from the rich.I think he just fits all the criteria fro heroism.
One, he was brave, Man, this guy was hunted fiercer than a golden deer would have been. All the rich and powerful men wanted his head on their wall, but he still risked it for the underdogs, which also makes him selfless. I imagine he was good looking, from how he is described.
He was smart. Imagine, if you will, you are a rich man of the 13th-14th century time period. Someone has been stealing from you when your in your house, in your carriage, everywhere. Everytime, you keep beefing up your security, your routes, your stratagies, yet this someone manages to steal from you every single time. I think you have to be clever to manage that.
He was also a leader. As you may or may not know, Robin Hood had his group of "Merry Men" and he was able to take care and provide for them the best he could.
He was able to think under pressure, he was strong and skilled, and he was following what he thought was right. He doesn't have super powers and he can't fly, but neither can batman so there.
Those are my two heroes :)

A contemporary figure I admire is Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. He was the first president of independent South Africa, and used to be the leader of the political party ANC (African National Congress). He was imprisoned in 1964 for “plotting to overthrow the government by violence”. He was really just trying to end apartheid. He was released in 1990 and immediately sought to end apartheid. Mandela and President De Klerk succeeded in ending apartheid in 1993, and were both awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Then, in 1994, Nelson Mandela was elected President of South Africa and vowed to create “a rainbow nation”.
ReplyDeleteI believe Mandela is a hero because he has many qualities that a hero should have. He’s intelligent, courageous, persuasive, determined, selfless and a natural-born leader. I know he’s intelligent and that he has good leadership qualities because he used to be a president. I can identify the fact that he’s courageous and determined because he survived 27 long years in prison and then, when he got out, he tried to end apartheid again. I can also recognize he’s selfless and persuasive because those are qualities a good leader has. I think it’s pretty amazing that Mandela didn’t want to get revenge on the people who locked him up for 27 years, and instead wanted to work with them.
A person who I know personally and admire is my dad. He was born within Uganda during the year 1962 in a hut. Then, in 1972, a dictator named Idi Amin ordered the expulsion of around 80,000 Asians. My 10 year old dad and his family were forced to move somewhere else, and so they chose Canada. Since he was new to the continent, my dad was really confused about numerous things and he learnt something new everyday. Now, we’re back in my dad’s homeland, East Africa.
I think of my dad as a hero because he has many qualities a hero should have. He’s intelligent, selfless, determined and brave. I know he’s determined and brave because it must have taken some guts to move to a completely new place, from a place you’ve been kicked out of by a ruthless dictator. Also, he was only ten at the time. I can identify the fact that he’s intelligent and selfless because he’s left his successful career in Canada to build the Aga Khan University Hospital.

The one historic person that I think is a hero is Martin Luther King Jr. He stood up for civil rights, something that many other black people did not have the strength or confidence to do. He achieves his goal without using any violence. He was smart, kind, and very brave. My favorite memory is when he delivered his I have a dream speech by the Lincoln memorial. It took lots of courage to make that kind of speech in front of millions of people. His actions change America and the rest of the world. Even after he was assassinated, his actions influenced many other people to carry on all of his doings. If he did not do all of the things that he did, the world may not have turned into the way it is.
ReplyDeleteNow a hero that I personally know is my dad. He faced many hardships turning his life, but was able to brush them off and keep on going. I do not know what I would do if he was not in my life. I can turn to him for about anything. He is kind, cool, and extremely smart. These are just some are the qualities that I want from him. He is a great father, and I want to be like him when I get older. He has influenced me to do anything, as long as I put my mind into it. If he was not in my life, I do not know if I would be the way that I am today.
These two heroes have influenced my life greatly. They are all the qualities that a hero needs: loyal, brave, kind, and influential. If these two people did not influence m and my actions, I do not think I would be the same person today.

ReplyDeleteI guess my first hero would be Barrack Obama because he is a man of pride and accomplishments. Obama has inspired me and many other people around the world. During the elections, Obama stated that he would do numerous things to help others around the world. One of them was to start decreasing the number of troops in Iraq. Also by 2011, they would be completely out. About a week ago, Obama gave a speech about how everyone should be able to practice their religion wherever they are. Therefore, he had decided to build a mosque for the Muslims so they are able to practice Islam in the States. After watching that speech, I felt that Obama was really trying to make sure that the different cultures and religions were getting along. Therefore, I felt very inspired by and I thought it was a very generous thing of him to do.
ReplyDeleteMy second hero would be my great grandpa. He is my second hero, because he had accomplished many things in life that have helped him in the future. My great grandpa is almost 100 years old. When he was still in his 20, he had decided that, he wanted to be different from other people. So instead of going to college, he decided to build a hotel and he did. He built a hotel, a coffee shop, a theater, and a football field. While he was building these sites, he got sick and he realized that he was going to die. Therefore, he thought no one was going to finish the sites he had began building. So he went on, he didn’t give up he fought the sickness and he still continued working on his sites. In the end he did not die, he just kept working and he opened up for business and he was very successful. My great grandpa was a very generous man and he is still alive. Every time we visit him during the summer, we would stay at his hotel. The theater is now closed he is planning to sell it. I guess when I grow up I would want to be like my great grandpa. I would want to accomplish many thing is life. Be different from others and have pride in what I do and never give up.
These two people are my heroes, because they have taught me that if you believe in yourself you will always be able to do what you had wanted in life. Barrack Obama and my great grandpa have the qualities that all heroes should have bravery, selflessness, loyalty, and kindness.
My first hero, who is known around the world, is Rory Gallagher. Personally I don’t know him, but from what I have read, he was a very “nice” guy. Rory Gallagher was a famous blues artist from around the 1970’s and 80’s. He was the lead guitarist and vocalist in a band called Taste. He wasn’t the leader of the band, so he did not have the ability to make all the choices for the band. Because of that, he left the band and created his own band: Rory Gallagher. In his own band he had a bassist: Gerry McAvoy, and various drummers. Rory Gallagher himself played guitar and harmonica, and was also the vocalist.
ReplyDeleteThe reason I chose Rory Gallagher as my hero, is because I love his music very much. He plays because he enjoys playing, and not for the money as much. That is one reason I consider him a hero. I also play guitar, and play a few of his songs, and am now trying to learn harmonica. I know that I will never be as skilled as Rory Gallagher, however I will still try, and hope to someday be able to play his songs smoothly and flawlessly. Rory Gallagher was partially the reason why I still play guitar now. After playing guitar for one year, I became very bored of it, not knowing what to play. My father recommended me to try to play one of Rory Gallagher’s songs. Although it was challenging it was very enjoyable.
My second hero is my sister Anne. The reason I chose her as my hero is because she is very smart and creative. She takes part in sports such as football, which she is brilliant in, and she is also very amazing in art. She is twenty one, so is now in university, and just received her Bachelor. Twenty one is a fairly young age to receive a Bachelor. She is now planning to start her Master. My sister also helped me organize my work better for school. I was never very good at managing my time, however she told me how to do it better, which I am very thankful for. Through these characteristics, I consider her as being my hero.
My first hero is a man who lived in an era of war and chaos. He was prime minister for England twice and fought in the Second Boer War, India, Sudan, and the First World War. This man is Winston Churchill. He is a hero because, in my opinion, he has proven that he is brave, knowledgeable, a leader, calm, and determined. He is brave because when he was in the Boer Wars, he was captured and managed to escape from certain death. He is knowledgeable because he wrote a dozen books about his war time life and about his ancestors. Being the Prime Minister for England during World War II, he proved to be a great leader by leading the Allies to victory. He was elected Prime Minister again in 1951, but he retired in 1955. In my opinion, he is one of the greatest men who ever lived as he experienced all kinds of life and knows how soldiers, politicians, warlords and even peasants live.
ReplyDeleteMy second hero is my dad. He has always been there for me and supported me in my endeavors. He supported me through my first drum lessons and helped me reach my level today after five years. He helped me do well in school by providing the right motivation, which obviously involved video games. My dad has gone through a lot of hardships in his business and family, but he has always stayed optimistic. He never gives in or gives up and pursues a project to the end of it completion. This is what my dad has taught me and it has helped me do well in school, music and life. For example, my dad just opened a new shop on Mombasa Road. It was a huge project but my dad went through with it and there are remnants of this project still in work today.
The person I have chosen as my first hero is Albert Einstein. He is known world over as the world's smartest man. The first half of Einstein's life he was seen as a lazy and sloppy boy. In Eintstein's mind his teachers never taught what he wanted to learn. When he befriended Max Talmud, Einstein's knowledge flourished and soon enough he was skipping school to stay at home to study philosophy books that Max had given him. Einstein found regular schooling to be strict and oppresive. That was why he skipped classes. I find this to be a heroic quality because he wanted to learn the latest information and so he studied on his own. The heroic quality here is that doing what you think is right and Einstein chose the right choice since he did become incredibly smart.
ReplyDeleteWhen Einstein became a patent clerk he worked 6 days per week. This is another good heroic quality (I think). He is hard working and even though that job was not his favourite he was calm and got the job done. During his patent job Einstein also revolutionized the world as we know it. He started asking questions and he wrote papers and soon enough his work was published. So what I'm trying to say about Einstein is that he was hard-working, a genius, and he did what he thought was the right thing and by not attending classes he managed to study on his own time and become the man we all know. A true hero in the scientific world.
My second hero is my own dad. Most days of the week he has to work late. Thats because he needs to support our life and I'm grateful for it. He has always encouraged me to study hard just because he wants me to have a bright future. My dad's life was hard. He started working for Schenker when he was 14 and he's been promoted to manager now. He's an amazing worker and is always on task. My dad is strict at times but I know he's looking out for my future. He's a smart man and loves to read books, and he always wants to get the job done well and as fast as possible. My dad is also a very jolly person and somewhat of a comedian. Anything he does its for me and I know I can't thank him enough.
I think that my first hero will be Martin Luther King Jr. I chose Martin Luther King because he's practically the one the made an end to racism. If it wasn't for him, then I don't know where the world would be right now. He made us people all equal. I agree with him because we shouldn't be defined by what skin color we are. It's who we are as people and whom we are inside. Back in the day I'm sure it was really hard for a black person to live. They could not interact with white people they were always barriers and they were always treated differently just because of their skin color. But a heroic thing about Martin Luther is that he had the courage and bravery to speak up for his people and say that we should all have equal rights. I think that maybe without Martin Luther King there might have been a lot more racism in the world. There still is some racism but not as much. Martin Luther King spoke very well to the public and his "I have a dream" speech touched a lot of people and influenced them after he died.
ReplyDeleteMy second hero is my mom. My mom works really hard for my sister and I. My dad's job is in South Africa so most of the time; he's out of the country so it's just my mom that takes care of us the most. My mom inspires me every day to make good choices from when it comes to friends and to my education. My mom believes in what she wants and knows that she can pursue her dreams if she just works hard and puts her mind to it. For example she has always wanted to have a pool at our house and she worked and got the money for it and now we have it! She is very strong minded and independent. What I love about my mom is that she encourages me to do what I want and not to hesitate. I don't know what I would do without her. Also I can talk to her about anything and I know that she's always there for me. She’s my hero.

ReplyDeleteAs we all know people can be born heroes, become heroes, and they can die heroes. Einstein, Mother Theresa, and Barrack Obama are heroes through time, and dedication, but you can become a hero in merely 1 second. My Hero didn’t revolutionize technology or bring a terrorist nation to its knees but he did something just as heroic. On January 30, 1994, Aris Espinosa saved the life of a group of children in a single selfless act. The kids were playing as usual when for some reason a frag grenade was tossed right next to them. Having to think fast, Aris threw himself on the grenade and the children watched as Aris was blown in his successful attempt to save his friends. I know he didn’t lead an army to freedom or change the way people look at the world but that story has inspired millions of people. It was sad because even though it took him only one second to become a hero, it only took him one second to die. May Aris R.I.P
ReplyDeleteMy Life has been filled with heroes. Many have gone but most of them I see every day. The person who is most heroic to me right now is my Dad. He was raised by a farmer who didn’t have enough money to send all of his kids to school. My Dad and his brothers worked so they would raise enough money to go to a decent secondary school. My father aced school, aced college, and went looking for a job. Since my Dad wanted to get a job that could support his family and helped the world at the same time he joined the UN. Eventually, around the time I was born, he decided to go and live in Afghanistan to organize medical attention in that country. His living conditions were terrible. He couldn’t even stay in a real house because it was so dangerous but he stayed there for 3 good years. From this my Dad only moved up. He darted from country to country donating to charities and more importantly being a good father. In all of this he always finds time to visit us in Kenya and I am thankful he is my father.
My personal hero would be my mom. She is a great inspiration to me because she is a cancer survivor. Every day she tells me that I am the one who made her get out of her deathbed, but i think she is the one who actually helped me because if she would have passed away (thank God she didn't), I would have died slowly inside because she has always been my best friend. We do everything together, and I can't see myself living without her. She always stands by me when I am going through tough times. She never gives up fighting in what she believes in, and the people she loves, and she is also very determined. She always ends up teaching me something new at the end of the day. She's selfless and always takes care of people who need help (for example, if my cousins need some money for school, she doesn't hesitate to give them money). She's a great leader, and inspires me to own a business just like her. She's very knowladgable and educated. She always stays calm and collected even in the worst situations, and is not afraid to take control. When I have problems, whether it's school or social problems, she's always there to listen to me, and I feel I can tell her anything! Last but not least, she is very loyal to the people she loves, and someone I have always (and continue to) look up to and be my role model. (:
ReplyDeleteMy historic hero would be Nelson Mandela because he was brave enough to do what other people couldn't, which was fight in what he believed in. He didn't give up, even after he was put down, beaten up, and taken to jail. As soon as he was released from prison, he continued his quest to end aparthied, and succeded! Then, in the 1990s he was elected president, and promised that South Africa will be like a rainbow country. He ended up being the first president of South Africa when it became an independent country. He would use sports (esp. rugby) to bring people together. He would not hold a grudge against the people who put him in jail. instead, he embraced as people in new South Africa. He would use his salary to help the underpriviledged, which makes him a selfless leader.
These are my two heros who i will always look up to (:
The art of Tim Burton is something that is very intriguing to me, because I find his work to be inspiring, different, daring, fascinating and from another world. What I like about his work, are the movies he has directed. When you watch one of the movies, you can immediately tell there is an essence of Tim Burton in it. He has influenced me in my way of drawing, because his art is magical and mysterious. He also has inspired me in pieces of clothing, especially with his last movie, Alice in Wonderland. Many people would find his movies to be depressing, or gothic. I think that the movies are original because from the movies I watched, none of them are as weird as Tim Burtons’ movies. Another thing that I like about his work is that he dares to do something different and be hiself. Something that I think we all learn from.
ReplyDeleteMy other hero would be my sister, Gabriela. I've always looked up to her because she is an outgoing, friendly, caring and daring person. She is always there for me when I need her, aroud school, or even at home. I always looked for her when it comes to advices of about school because she is the person that knows the school best. She is also the person that encourages me to do things before backing away for opportunities because I'm shy. It was because of her i started to like singing, dancin and acting, and is now one of my favorite things to do. This is why I think it's going to be hard for me when she leaves for college.

ReplyDeleteIt was very difficult for me to pick just one person to identify as my contemporary/historic hero. However, I was introduced to a boy last year who really stood out to me. I met Austin Gutwein at the Global Issues Service Summit Africa last year. I heard him speak, and was astonished by the fact that this boy, only two years older than me, had started Hoops of Hope, annual free-throw marathon that raises money and awareness about HIV/Aids and children orphaned because of it in Africa. So far, he has raised over 1,227,000 USD, and every penny has been used to assist HIV/Aids orphans and patients. He has built HIV/Aids clinics, labs, an orphan hope center, and a school. This boy isn’t even an adult yet, and he has provided an incomprehensible amount of help to HIV orphans in Zambia and Southern Africa. He has all the traits of a real hero, and is a fantastic role model.
ReplyDeletePicking a family hero was also very problematic for me. There are plenty of people I look up to in my family, but my grandfather is one person I find to be extremely heroic. Thomas Lampert is my mothers father. Before he met my grandmother, he served in the navy during the Korean war. He sailed on a minesweeper, a boat named the USS Endicott. He saw a lot of awful things, and the war was very difficult for him. However, the USS Endicott preformed many great duties and saved many lives. After my grandfather received and honorable discharge and left the navy, he went on to become a wonderful father, and a wonderful grandfather. He may not be the best leader or the humblest person, but he is incredibly self-less, brave, and compassionate. My grandfather is a great person, and a true hero...
My First hero is Gandhi because even though in his childhood he was a child who miss-behaved and whom everybody thought would never amount to anything but despite his past he became a peaceful leader. He was kind and powerful and saved India from the British. However unlike many freedom fighters he did not use violence he was for civil disobedience and he had all the great qualities of a hero except that he did not have superpowers or was not good with a gun. This is what makes Gandhi the perfect hero.
ReplyDeleteMy second hero would be Rupert Russel my grand uncle (My Grandmother's brother). He would be my hero because he was committed to saving the environment. He would stop people from doing bad things to the environment without a selfish thought. He got into a lot of trouble for doing this. One thing that he would do was chaining himself to very polluting cars so that they could not drive away. He also saved a small wooded area from being burned unnecessarily burned. He has saved many small forests two. He is kind, selfless and bold.
my first hero is a well known peace maker, Gandhi. he is my hero for many reasons, here are some of them. He was the man who singlehandedly brought india its independence from the british. he risked his life for the people of his country, I'm not most people would do that. finally he thinks outside the box, many leaders have chosen violence to gain their independence. but Gandhi chose peace to save the lives of his fellow countrymen.
ReplyDeletethere are many people who i consider to be my hero in my family. but i think my sister has had the biggest impact. she has made me work hard to achieve and surpass my goals. she has made me into an independent person. and i think its the fact that I'm the younger sibling that makes me want to beat her when she was my age. even though we somtimes want to rip each others head off, i consider her as my hero.
Nelson Mandela is a hero because he was able to stand up for what he believed in. He fought against apartheid, the segregation of different races based on skin color. He was determined and extremely brave as he was able to stay in jail for 27 years. Even when he was embarrassed in public and called names he remained driven. In one of his speeches he states “after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb”. He never lost hope and fought hard to be certain that in the future kids could play together freely, have a good education and good paying jobs. “I dream of an Africa which is in peace with itself.” Nelson Mandela possesses all the qualities it takes to be a hero. Without his efforts thousands of kids wouldn’t be able to go to good schools or have equal opportunities. I would love the chance to meet him and to ask him how he had enough courage to go through what he did.
ReplyDeleteThe second person I would consider to be a hero would have to be my mom. Though she is yet to start a revolution she is awesome. She has worked her way from the bottom to the top. What I mean by this is when she started out at the U.N she was a tour guide now she is the OCHA Somalia head of office. She is definitely someone I can look up to because she raised me and she works full time. If anyone needs anything she is always there to help. She is filled with good advice. She has never once hit me or even shouted at me. When I do something wrong I know there are going to be consequences but she is always quick to make her decisions. I find her to be very thoughtful. She is good at leading things and making decisions under pressure. Most people would say their parents are heroes but my mom is definitely a hero to many people including myself.
My first hero is Amelia Earhart because during a time when women didn't do any of the exploring she became the first to fly solo across the atlantic ocean, and she is a woman! She was extremely brave by doing this fantastic flight. She was also self sacrificing by doing these flights, because her plane crashed and she was never found, and was marked as dead, but no body knows how long she could have survived or if she died in the crash. She was also very passionate for what she did and she devoted her life to flying, when it wasn't the safest way of travel and she was always at risk. She helped women to become more looked up to and gave them more opportunities. This is way i feel like Amelia Earhart is my famous heroine.
ReplyDeleteChoosing a family hero was quite hard for me, as there are many people in my family who are well off and would be considered as a hero/heroine to me. But over all i would have to choose my Grandpa, Peter Dunlop. He is my hero because he has survived five heart attacks and to me, that is just incredible. He was quite a good athlete when he was growing up, and sadly that has caused quite a lot of illnesses to him. Even though he has all these illnesses, his body and heart remian strong and are fighting very hard. He is a amazing man, who is very caring and brave, it scares him so much to visit the hospital each week, but he pulls through and is always very brave. I love my grandpa and i am so proud of him, for all these reasons, that is why i choose him as my personal hero. :)
I Guess my first hero would be Martin Luther King Jr, simply because he fought for civil rights in the United States, believing everyone should be treated the same way. This person went all the way to support the Black Sanitary Public works Employees who had been on strike. His life and assassination also inspired many artistic works, he was not only known nationally, but internationally as well, and I’m pretty sure that 10, if not 20 years from now, children at school will still be taught about the man who believed in human rights . I’m sure everyone remembers him in one way or another, but he is a man that will obviously be remembered for a long time to come. I see him as a hero in many different ways, not only because he never gave up,but he didn't want to take no for an answer and he fought for his people until the day he died, these are all aspects a hero should have.
ReplyDeleteMy second hero is my grandmother ( may her soul rest in peace), i chose her because she has always been one of my greatest role models. As soon as my granny was married, she had eight children of her own but still loved others like they were hers, she always wanted people to feel at home and would never let a person feel alone for one second in their life. She battled various sicknesses for over 45 years, and still managed to live long enough to see all of her grandchildren( probably adds up to more than 27).If ever i had a problem of any sort, she was my go to person, I could talk to her about anything, whenever I wanted to, which made me feel really comfortable . A true hero, if truly idolized, shouldn't fade away. She is, and will forever be my hero.
My Hero’s
ReplyDeleteI’ve been learning and hearing about my hero’s for quite some time. My personal hero is my dad. My historic hero is Martin Luther King. My dad is my hero because of several reasons. He is a person a can look up to, a person I can talk to about anything, and most important he teaches me how to be a better person every day! Martin Luther King is my historic figure because the first time I learnt about him I was in first grade, and we had to watch and learn about him. I remember watching the movie and thinking, wow I would really like to be just like him, standing up for what I believe in!
My father is my hero because of all the things he has accomplished in his life, and what he wants to do! My father is my hero because he always does the right thing. When I say something, or do something my dad tells me what the right thing is to do. He follows the rules. He is a very smart, bold, and strong man. I want to follow in my father’s footsteps because I want to have a personality like him. My dad was a marine, and now he works at the American Embassy. He pursued what he wanted to do!
Martin Luther King is my hero because of his courageous actions! He stood up for what he knew was right. He fought for others! He spoke for the people that couldn’t. Martin Luther King had a family, and back then it was dangerous to speak out with people you love around you. He is a strong, an independent man, and should never be forgotten!!

If you were to ask most teenage girls what a qualities a typical hero should have, you would probably hear the same thing from just about all of them. He’d have to be attractive, charming kind able to handle a weapon, sweet funny, muscular…the list goes on. However, for me it’s different. As times change so do the heroes. I believe that a lot of the characteristics that make up a hero are inside a human being. Children of our generation (teens especially) have learned to judge a person on their physical appearance but I believe that to be hero you have to be able to overlook the qualities and be able to look at the person in side. Almost everyone cares about what other people think of him or her and I believe that we have to learn how to overlook this. Be brave and courageous, stand for what you believe is right no matter what other people think or say. Be a leader, show that there are other ways to think about certain ideas, include everyone and though you might think that you look dumb right now, all of these qualities of a “hero” will help you in the future.
ReplyDeleteMy Hero:
When young kids are asked who their hero is we expect (and are given) silly answers like “Spiderman!” When they are asked why we are given silly answers like” Because he’s cool! And can shoot webs out of his pinkie fingers!” However, as we mature and grow we begin to look at our surroundings differently and begin to think of these artificial cartoons to be not so realistic as was thought before. When we are asked again who our hero is we think of someone real, a monumental figure or even someone in our own personal life. When I think of my hero I think of my mother. This is because she is the one person who knows me sometimes even better that I know my self. She has always been there for me and we are extremely close. She taught me how to not care what other people think or say about me and to just be myself. I know I’ll always have her back.
In my opinion my first hero is the man who saved my country and its people from further slavery and bad treatment. I choose Mahatma Gandhi to be my hero as he has prooven himself to me by freeing India from the rule of Britain on 15th August 1947. He is also my hero because although it did take some time for India to break free, he made sure that he accomplishes his mission without the use of violence. Lastly he was also very charitable as he made " ashrams " where poor people would live in to get food and shelter. He also provided their children with education and would also on special occasions give them clothes.
ReplyDeleteMy second hero is dad. I choose my dad as a hero because he was there for me through all my troubles and helped me get through it by telling me that it was all going to be alright and even though he didnt give me the solution he gave me the courage to face the trouble. He is also my hero because because of his job, I have the priviledge to travel around the world and study in some of the best schools which some people are not able to do. Thirdly my reason of him being my hero is that because of him i have what i have today and that without him i would be nothing.
Saurabh Sawant - My first hero would be Martin Luther King Jr. He was one of the few people back in the day who stood up for African american people rights. He was an great leader for the african community. He lead to boycott and follow it path of justice. Martin Luter KIng was also very understanding, he knew the people and what problems they had, (for himself going through the same thing). He had passion and feel for the peoples right. Martin Luter King was also very bold and courageous, he had to stand up for what he belives in, and I respect that. Martin Luter King an hero? I think YES!
ReplyDeleteMy personal hero would none other than, BATMAN!
Batman is one of the most herioc heros ever created. He is always so bold is what he does. he always beats up the bad guy.(although Joker is pretty good) Batman was always the leader in what ever he does, in his missions or he's secret identitiy ( he also has a really cool car and outfit!) He was also very nobel, he doesnt take any money for his actions (unlike the poilce). He's always the one taking the hits from both police and bad guys. Batman is the ultimate hero!
When asked to write about a hero in my life I immediately thought about my father. To me my father is one of the most prominent people in my life and someone who has helped mold me into who I am today. My father is a very intelligent man, but more than that he is a hard worker. He came from a background filled with poverty but despite that he continued to work hard, to strive for a better future. That is what I most admire about my father. Once he sets a goal he will not stop until he reaches it, and that is something that I wish that I could do more of.
ReplyDeleteHero 2
Another one of my heroes is Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela was South Africa’s first president of indigenous decent. I admire Nelson Mandela for many reasons. He was brave, strong, and most of all caring and warm. He was a man that would care for people equally and never stray from his beliefs. But most of all I admire him because he was not only fighting for himself but for a purpose greater than himself.
My first hero would be my mom because of many reasons. One of them would be that she really finds time to really go out and really help people. This inspires me because it shows me that with a little bit of time you can do a lot for people who need help. My mom is also really an awesome mom so when i grow up I want to be just like her and treat my children the same way so that they can be inspired to. Recently mom just started school so she is always telling me to do my best and that if she can I can too.
ReplyDeleteAnother hero i would choose would be Wangari Mathia. She is a very important person to me and the community. She is very kind, thoughtful, and cares so much about the world. Ever since she was young she always loved environment and all the treasures it holds. I think it is great because she finds a wonderful pleasure out of planting trees. That I why she i think she is heroic.
My first hero is Obama. I think Obama is a hero because of all the things hes accomplished. He has become a senator and then went on to become the president of the United States. Obama is also a hero because he was determined. He pushed himself like most heroes. He always tried to do the best that he could. Obama has to deal with so many problems by being president, but he handles them calmly. He sometimes may make decisions that people don't like but sometimes heroes have to do that to make things better. Even if they have to make sacrifices. These qualities are hero qualities.
ReplyDeleteMy second "hero" is a combination of my grandpa and my grandma. I think their heroes because there the kind of couple that like to help people no matter what. My grandparents love to work with organizations that help people. Whether it be a charity or working with the U.N. My grandpa has the qualities of a hero because he always will offer advice to people to try to improve there situation and help with there problems. He has worked with UNICEF as the Regional Director to help make children that don't have the same opportunities like you or me. My grandma on the other hand is more involved in charities. She has the qualities of being sympathetic towards people not as well-off like street kids. She is driven and determined to help as many kids as possible which I think is very heroic.
My first hero is Martin Luther King jr. because he was
ReplyDeleteso determined to accomplish his goal and now the world is a much better place because of him and the other people who fought against segregation.
The main reason he is one of my heroes is because he inspires me to be determined and to be selfless, because his mission not only affected black people for better but also for every other race. He also taught me how to live with other people even through I might not understand their culture or way of life.
My second hero is my mother because she taught me a lot of important life lessons. The main one being not to cut corners because they will eventually catch up with you. She also taught me how to respect other people and treat others how I would like to be treated. I think she done a very good job raising me and my siblings considering she is a single mother .She’s caring, kind, cool and one of the most selfless people I know. That is why she one of my heros.

It is hard for me to identify a hero as there are so many but I think that the person who stands out most would probably be Nyjah Huston. He is an American professional skateboarder despite only being 15. Nyjah Huston is the youngest person ever to compete in the X-Games, competing against other world famous skateboarding super stars. He started skateboarding at the early age of 5 years old and has been doing so ever since. He competed in 'Goofy vs Regular' a renown competition when he was only 11 years old! until now he has been in skate videos, tours and small competitions and as stated before; this year he entered the X-Games.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion Nyjah Huston is a hero because of his will to succeed, his tireless effort and his amazing talent. When I see him skateboard it brings me hope, that anyone can be professional at what they do they just have to be positive and never give up. Nyjah is a model of young talent, on-going effort and he is a role model to all, He is going to be very successful in the future and his name may be as big as Tony Hawk. Nyjah Huston is my modern Hero.
Martin
ReplyDeleteMy historical hero in my opinion is Martin Luther King. He was seen as an iconic figure to the African Americans because of his determination and dedication to the African American civil rights movement. During his short career, he led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He is also a hero because he wanted peace for the world and wanted to end poverty and to stop the Vietnam War. What makes him a hero is his will to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through non-violent means such as civil disobedience.
He’s a hero because he never stopped wanting peace for the world and didn’t stop at anything to bring civil rights and freedom to America. He also never wanted war such as the Vietnam War as it took money and resources that could have been used and spent on social welfare like the War on Poverty.
My personal heroes are my parents because they are always there to help me when I need them they always want the best for me make sure that I am happy. What makes my parents my heroes are that they always know what’s best for me and are always there to help me in every situation so that I make the best decisions. My parents are always fair with me and I always have someone to talk to when I’m in doubt, or if I have problems at school.
They are also my heroes because they make the best of every situation. They are always determined to make my life better.
My Modern Day hero
ReplyDeleteMy Hero in my everyday life I would have to say is my mom; she is a woman who inspires me. She is hard-working a loving, caring and fun person. She has done more than I wanted for me, she has worked had to send me to good schools, she has worked hard to help me pursue my swimming and she has always been there through the good and bad. She has helped me become who I am today, without my mom I would not have been who I am today because the way she raised me and things she has done for me are immaculate and I couldn’t be any more thankful. She has always been there to push me to be the best I can possibly be. My mom is the one person that I know who will be there for me whenever I need someone’s support or advice. I want to like my mom when I grow up because she is hard working. From a very humble past where they could only afford one car and that was hard to pay for gas to where she is today, I think is spectacular because today she doesn’t have to worry about paying of gas or sharing one bathroom with her brothers. My mom has worked very hard for us and has provided for my siblings and I extremely well and I hope I can do the same for my family. I will always see my mom as my role model because she is truly inspiring, she loves my family and I and how much she loves and does for the community is also very inspiring. My mom is my role model.

My Hero from the past.
ReplyDeleteMy hero form the past is the Aga Khan because he is very inspiring and the fact that he has Shia Ismail followers all around the world who listen and follow what he says because he is their leader. He has helped them in their time of need for example when Edie Ameen kicked all the Ismail’s out of Uganda and gave then 12 hours to leave the country with only one bag. The Aga Khan helped the Ismail’s by asking his close friends from the United Kingdom and Canada if they can be brought into Canada and the UK and be looked after and indeed they were. In the world today the highest populations of Ismail Muslims in the world are in Canada. The Aga khan doesn’t not only help the Ismail community but also other communities by setting up schools and hospitals around Africa for everyone not only the Ismailies. The Aga Khan is my hero because he gave up a lot to become the leader of our community after his grandfather died, he gave up the chance to go to the Olympics and ski because he wanted to lead us and guide us on the right path. The Aga Khan has been our leader for over 50 years and in those 50 years he has done a lot such as opening schools hospitals; education centers new Jamaat Khanas (mosques) and so on. He has made the world know who the Ismail’s are and what they do. His work is appreciated and people see him as a hero today because of how much he has helped the community grow and has also helped the world by giving. The Aga khan is truly an inspiration to me and he has all my respect and I am thankful to him for making us Ismailies stable, guiding us on the right path and helping other communities get over their troubles. The Aga khan has defiantly made a mark on the world and more so in my heart.

The person I think is a hero is my great aunt Murietta Olu Williams. Although I did not know her personally she did some brave and courageous things. My great aunt was a very respectable woman in Sierra Leone. She was the first woman in Africa to get the position of a permanent secretary and this was during when Sierra Leone was a British colony. I think she was courageous because she knew because of her sex any of her mistakes would be judged or taken more seriously than if a man had done the same mistake. She also worked for the Civil Service in 1950 as a supervising teacher, and then in 1962 she transferred to the administrative service. Her job as a permanent secretary was to provide support and advice to the president or prime minister. I also think my great aunt was brave because she helped these children who were in great danger because their father was a wanted man. Murietta Olu Williams helped them get out of Sierra Leone and in to Britain so no harm would come towards the children. She was also trying to prove that women are capable of doing anything if they work hard at it. These are some of the reasons why I think my Great aunt Murietta Olu Williams was a hero.
ReplyDeleteThe other hero I know personally is my father because he works for UNICEF and to narrow it down he helps unfortunate children and tries to give better facilities. He helps abused or unfortunate affected by war by giving them an education a home or a family. He works very hard to ensure that me and my sister get a good education and be successful in the future. I also think my father is a hero because he gives me advice on my mistakes and on life. He broadens my thinking and perspective on the world. He persuades me to read a genre of literature that I thought I would never enjoy but after I do. These are some reasons why I think my father is a hero.
Now I don’t think a hero has to have powers or a gun. I also don’t think a hero has to use violence to persuade people. A hero can be smart, persuasive, persistent and outgoing. A hero can change the world or change one person. A hero also has to be strong but I know what every hero may encounter a journey.

A hero in my opinion is someone who is selfless, loyal, courageous and strong...both in strenght and mind.
ReplyDeleteHe has to be able to fulfil all the challenges that are set out and shouldnt give up!
the two peope that i think are my heroes are first, my dad. I thik that he is a hero because he always puts his family first and him last. For example, when i was around 3 years old, I standing on a railway track and there was a train coming at full speedd. My dad is the one who saved me from the train and nearly got himself killed!
My second hero, is naturally, fromall the shows i used to watch, Batman!
I think that Batman is the complete hero type man who can do anything who is selfless and loya, he wont rest til he does what needs to be done and this really really had a effect on me!
I remember once when i watched this episode where Batman was about to die and so tired, but still didnt give up because he hadnt accomplished what he had st out to do...this really effected me as being a true hero.
Therefore i chose these two people as my heroes..Although i do have one more mportant one!
For a hero that I personally do not know, i would pick Martin Luther king for several reasons;he believed in equality, he fought for his rights, and he stood up for what he believed in. If he didn't do all the things he did and if he didn't act the way he did, the world would be so different today in a bad way. Martin Luther King fought for his rights and for all people to be equal. He did not believe in racial segregation and even though someone shot him, we live amongst the things he fought for. Other important people such as Gandhi peacefully demonstrated what he believed in and he never gave up fighting for his rights... no matter the consequences.
ReplyDeleteFor a hero that i personally know, i would choose my mum. She is smart, wonderful, kind and so much more! I believe she taught me so much and i feel like i can talk to her about anything. I know she is here for me any time i need her and any time i have a problem, i am not scared to talk to her about it. she taught me good morals and she taught me that sometimes you have to give up some things to help someone else have a better life; and she showed me that giving to the less fortunate and helping people in need is something important. If i didn't have my mum i don't know how i would be. that is why my mum is a hero to me. :D
