As we begin to read To Kill a Mockingbird, think about the concept of justice. Answer the following questions in a 500-word response. Be specific and provide personal anecdotes and examples where possible.
* What is 'Justice’ and does justice apply equally to:
the rich and the poor?
the white and the non-white?
the socially prominent and the social outcast?
the male and the female?
In the book "to kill a mockingbird", there is not a lot of fair justice.
ReplyDeleteJustice is based on racism in the book which meant that the whites ( not trying to be racist), got the best privaleges, while the colours (not trying to be racist) had to strive and work very hard just to try and get justce, which in the end, wasn't always given.
In the book, injustice is portrayed in many ways, one way where, when a white person doesnt have a seat in a train or gathering or something, the coloured person has to give up their seat.
This is injustice because I believe that we are all equal be it colours or not.
Throughout the book,Scout, learns slowly about the injustice that takes place around her and how not everything that is said about the other races are as true and exagurated as some people say and infact, the other races are just like them.
Racism is a big part in this book and I think that this shows scout how bad racism is and how it can take advantage of people while favouring others.for example;when they had no church books to sing.
In conclusion, I think that the justice in this book is unfair to the coloured and the blacks because the whites get the best of the schools and of life while the coloured are treated unfairly and poorly.
Justice is one of the biggest problems in the world and it is very hard to control it. kenya has a big problem with it in corruption. the rich people most of the time win and justice is done because the rich use corruption and the poor people always loose out. the poor people has no control in terms of money so they struggle to survive in a community that has so many rich people.
ReplyDeleteRacism is a very big problem all around the world and because of what has happened in south africa and america for example has caused a major out break in the world and many people are racist. I find it very unfair how the black people always loose out to the white people which is really not fair. People in the world should have equal rights black or white. the white people are normally like and they are given justice but the black people are never given justice.
The socially prominent are normally given the most justice and the people who are outcasts. The male is normally given more justice than the female in our society for reasons that i am unsure of. I find this very unfair and i think that everyone should get equal rights. The adults normally get more justice than the children but i think that this is not a bad thing because adults have more knowledge than children.
Justice is fairness. Justice is what conquers right over wrong. Justice is equality. Justice is applied to everyone. It doesn’t matter what you look like justice is served to all. But in our society, there is more injustice than justice. Most times it’s because we are a different color, or the place we come from. Or how many things we have, if we are male or, female or child or adult. There is injustice. In to kill a mockingbird scout experiences different types of injustice. In the beginning, people are judged by their family background. For example, when she first goes to school she describes the Cunning hams and how poor they are. She thinks she is above them but she does not know she is being unfair. Or when she tells about the Ewells and how they are a disgrace to Maycomb. She might be right about how people’s background can affect how they are, but some people can be nasty. Like the Ewells. But justice should be given a chance. In the book, that was given to Robert Ewell, but he did not use it. There is a lot of racism and prejudice in to kill a mockingbird. And in this world. Harper Lee expressed that pretty well in the book.
ReplyDeletePeople no matter what their skin tone is should deserve justice. But in the real world, people are afraid of what they do not know and skin tone is the most common. Justice should be given to every person, but it is not. Like skin tone, the ones who are unique to the others get treated differently. Like the blacks in To Kill A Mockingbird. The sad thing is, is that even though people try and help, like Atticus, people will still take the word of a person who is white. They are scared of what would happen if they would take the word from a black man. Like at the ending of the trial, Tom Robinson was convicted guilty even though they all saw that he was innocent. This is unjust. Color defines what most people think and the difference between the rich and poor defines our thoughts as well, influencing decisions. In the book, Harper Lee clearly demonstrates the change of attitude towards the rich, educated and the poor. Like Walter Cunningham. People looked down at him and his family as they were an uneducated lot, who worked on their farm. In the book, the ones who are rich and educated, like Jem, Scout and the rest of their family are taken more seriously then those who have little and are not accustomed to the ways of the educated. Atticus, a highly educated and intelligent man was always respected. But even those who are poor, still have voices and it is unfair to them and everyone that they are not allowed to voice their opinions. The elite also do not have a chance to hear what they have to say. The difference between child and grown up is that a child is considered, young, naive, and stupid. Their opinion does not matter to the adults and this is very one minded and old fashioned. This world is a very unjust place. I believe to make it better we should stop stereotyping and allow the ones without a voice to be heard and I think with that we would learn a lot.
ReplyDeleteJustice is farness. Its right triumphing over wrong and love to all. Justice is not dependent on variables like a person’s appearance, background, language, or legacy. Justice is equality administrated in search of the truth. Justice applies to everything, the rich and the poor, the white and the non-white, the socially prominent and the social outcast, the male and the female and the adult and the child. However throughout history justice is rare and injustice is far more abundant then justice. To Kill a Mocking Bird is a story about a fight for justice. In the book there are the warriors of justice like Atticus, the victims of injustice like tom Robinson and the plentiful amount of soldiers of injustice like The Jury in the Trail and Bob Ewell.
ReplyDeleteIn to kill a mocking Bird there are copious amounts off injustice mostly found in race. In To Kill a Mocking Bird Whites are regarded higher than blacks regardless of the white person’s lifestyle achievements and personality. A white person word will always be believed over a black person’s word in court. An example of this is in the case of Tom Robinson, Bob Ewell a drunken ignorant man says that Tom Robinson a black man has raped her daughter and despite strong contradictory evidence the racist jury convicts Tom and he is sentenced to death.
Today and throughout History justice is not shown because of money. This is not completely shown in to kill a mocking Bird but in many cases because a rich man can afford a great lawyer and a poor man cannot justice will not be served. Having a bad lawyer or a good lawyer seems to be what you need to obtain justice and therefore money is sometimes what one needs to obtain justice or to create injustice. When money is inserted in to a fight for justice it quickly can become unjust and not fare for a poor man against a rich man.
Justice I think justice is applied equally today between men and women unlike many years ago when women had few rights and were not treated justly when they were contradicting a male. I think between a child and an adult justice is perhaps not always given to the child, perhaps because other adults believe their peers rather than a child whom they think does not understand things. I think sometimes the adult can be right that the child does not understand but other times is taking advantage of the child and the child knows exactly what they are talking about.
To kill a mocking bird is a great account of justice and the inefficiencies that can lie in the “justice” system. These inefficiencies often create injustice and hellish results for an innocent person. I Hope people take the lessons about justice in To Kill a Mocking Bird to heart and apply them to all aspects of their life, how they treat people, how they view people and how they judge people. Hopefully if people do this significant changes will occur in people’s lives.
Justice is the quality of being fair that is the definition from an online dictionary. I would say the term justice is little more than a concept. I say that is because justice is supposed to apply to everyone rich or poor but its only applies to you if you have money. In the past the law was prejudice because of peoples mind set. The word of a white person was enough to send a black person to jail
ReplyDeleteJustice doesn’t apply for the poor because lawyers need to get paid because law has become a business so when there is no money there are no good lawyers.
The law use to be a seemingly whites only thing but now race doesn’t matter now which is good thing because everyone need to be represented well but justice isn’t only put into action in courts. In to kill a mocking bird an example of justice is shown with Bob Ewell. He sentenced a man to die unjustly and later he got killed. The law should be fair to everyone no matter what race.
The law should apply for socialites and outcasts alike because no one is above the law so the law should treat everyone as equals. Justice is also shown at the end of the novel with boo radlley when scout decides not to tell the town about boos heroic actions
I mostly see grown up being represented in courts but children are represented quite fairly. Injustice is shown quite a bit to scout an example is when she’s explaining about the Cunningham’s then she gets in trouble for explaining about the Cunningham clan. Another example of injustice

ReplyDeleteJustice is fairness in actions and treatment. People must be treated equally and a person must not be thought of as less than any other. Throughout the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, people are often treated unfairly. They are thought of as less than other individuals. One example of such is with Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson is a black man who was accused of raping a white woman. Evidence was shown to prove this, but the jury, being all-white, disapproved. They reached a conclusion of Tom Robinson being guilty, though he only had one hand, making it difficult for a man to rape a woman. This unfairness towards Tom shows great injustice, only because of Tom’s race.
ReplyDeleteThere is not much difference with justice between the rich and the poor. In court, for example, a rich person would most likely win however. The reason is because they have more money so can most likely get a better lawyer for example. This is not very justifiable however, but it does not change fairness due to any sorts of appearance traits. Another reason where money may be an issue when it comes to justice, is for education. If a person has more money, they can get a better education. This later lets these people have a good education, which will allow them to get a good job. The people that hiring others, would choose for a well-educated person, rather than a person who is uneducated due to the fact that they have little money.
Throughout the years there has been injustice between race. Often blacks are treated less well than whites are. This treatment is unfair, showing injustice. An example of a time of great injustice between blacks and whites, was during the Civil Rights Movement. Blacks were protesting against the little amount of rights they had. They thought it was very unfair the way that they barely had any rights compared to the whites. One main leader of a number of organizations during this time, was Martin Luther King, Jr. He led many protests and eventually many blacks and himself were successful. The large amount of racism and inequality was finally being reduced.
Nowadays, there is not much injustice between the male and the female. Females have just as many rights as men do and vice versa. This is only fair because there is no reason for men to have more rights than women or the other way around. Around a century ago, however, women and men had very different roles in society. Women then did have less rights. I am not sure about the reason for this, but that was just how it was. Females weren’t allowed to vote, which they did not like. Around that time, or even sooner, they were fed up and protested. Eventually, they succeeded and received the right to vote. There may have been other examples, however I honestly don’t know any others.
Overall, there has been a fairly large amount of injustice in societies around the world. Racism was a big part of this injustice, especially against blacks. But people did fight hard for their rights, however. They fought hard and risked a lot, including many lives. This fighting was good, however, and eventually succeeded. But the fighting is not meant literally. The blacks never actually “fought” for their rights. They protested in many different ways, all mainly peacefully. It was a good idea for them to fight so hard, because today, injustice is a lot less than it has been at times in history.

ReplyDeleteJustice is righteousness in court. It brings punishment to the people who sin, and freedom to the innocence. However, sometimes righteousness is clouded by greed and evil. In some cases, righteousness is misunderstood and is not distributed properly between the good and the bad. This is shown in today’s world.
ReplyDeleteThe rich and poor have different levels of justice. The rich, having the wealth to afford a good lawyer, will be triumphant over the poor in trials in court, mostly because of their wealth. People may say that they have no reason to commit a crime because they are wealthy and have everything they could ever want. The wealthy, if they know they will be convicted, can bribe court officials to let them get off easy. This is because of their wealth. The poor to not have opportunities like this. They cannot afford the best lawyer and the wealth status can be used against them when people think that they are desperate for money or food. Justice can be manipulated in this scenario to benefit the rich and make life harder for the poor. It is not applied equally here.
The segregation between the whites and non-whites has been over for a few decades now. Justice between the two is relatively equal do to the Civil Rights Act which gave non-whites rights in the US. However if there was a court trial back in the 1920s between a white man and a colored man, the white man would have won the plea every time because of the segregation laws. This would have shown a manipulation of justice to favor the white man during the 1920s. Justice is applied equally here today.
The social outcasts of today are frowned upon by the mass public, mostly because they do not fit in. They are rebels who fight the “man” of today’s world. However, this does not give them equal justice to a socially prominent person who lives “normally.” People see these rebels as attention seekers who will do anything to get attention, therefore pulling their plea further from them, making the justice to them unequal to the justice of a socially prominent person.
Over the years, males and females have had many disputes. There was inequality, voting rights and job equality. Justice has also seen turns for the worst and for the better. Today, justice between males and females is equal because of the many acts that were passed over the last few centuries.
A child has an unequal amount of justice to an adult because people see a child as being innocent and ignorant. A punishment to a child would not be as severe to an adult who committed the same crime. Children may get off with a warning or go to a Juvenile Delinquents Center for a few months. This is not as bad as being sent to jail as an adult. This shows how the justice between children and adults is uneven.
Justice is the idea that everyone gets and equal chance. Its supposed to be a fair way to give everyone fair rights. It is also a way to make decisions in a community in a fair way. Justice does not apply equally to the rich and the poor. This is because the rich have more money so they can bribe their way into the system of justice. Another thing is that people always assume that the rich man has no reason to lie because they have everything and the poor man lies because he has nothing and wants to gain something. When actually it may be the opposite. Rich people have everything to loose and so they may lie to keep their status or wealth in the community. While the not so rich have nothing to loose by telling a lie. To them if it goes badly they have nothing to loose from the outcome. Justice is applied fairly equally to the whites and non-whites. Before the whites used to get privilege when it came to decisions but times are changing. As a result the non-whites have gained justice, however there are still a few places in which the whites get more justice than the non-whites. No matter how you look at it the socially prominent and the social outcasts do not get treated the same. It may be that the socially prominent are favored because they are what is typical and accepted in a certain community. However sometimes the social outcasts are favored because people think because they are different more pity should be felt on them. Or even at times that they don’t have to be dishonest because they don’t really care what people think. In the of males versus females many people may like to think that males have always had more justice than females. I myself am not so sure because females in the past have had to deal with less consequences for doing certain things. While males have had harsher punishments. However in the olden days males did have more rights than females. In today’s society however it is evident that males and females get approximately the same amount of justice. Adults and children do not get the same amount of rights. Most adults get more rights because it is thought that they are typically smarter. Its also because they have lived for longer. In conclusion most groups with any sort of negative stereotype does not get as much justoce as they should.
ReplyDeleteJustice is being fair and treating everyone equally. During the book To Kill a Mockingbird injustice was conveyed to the reader in many ways. There was little justice shown throughout the novel. There was no justice with the white and the non-white, the male and the female, the adult and the child and the social prominent and the social outcasts. However I feel that there was justice between the rich and the poor.
ReplyDeleteFirstly there was no justice between the white and the non- white mainly because of the time period. Whites were always treated more justly than non- whites. There are many examples of this in the book. Whites were allowed into the court first, then the non-whites were allowed in, Tom Robinson was tried extremely unjustly because he was a non- white the jury went in favour of the white girl because there was no justice. All these reasons can show that there was no justice between whites and non- whites.
Secondly there was also no justice between males and females. This was because men thought that women were not as smart. In To Kill a Mockingbird this unjustness was shown in the scene when Atticus told Scout and Jem that women were not allowed to be judges but men were. This reason can show that there was no justice between the male and the female.
Thirdly there was no justice between the social outcasts and the social prominent. An example that shows this is Aunt Alexandra’s group of ladies, they do not like any social outcasts and they only treat socially prominent people justly.
Fourthly there is no justice between Adults and children in the book. There are many examples that show that there is no justice between adults and children. Aunt Alexandra did not pay too much attention to Jem and Scout because they were only children. Children are not treated and respected as well as adults in the book. If there were a court case an adult would probably receive a bigger and harsher punishment than a child because of the age difference. All these reasons can show that there was no justice between adults and children.
However I do think that there is justice between the rich and the poor in the book. This justice is shown in many ways. Atticus told his children Jem and Scout that they were poor but they were still treated justly. They were well respected in Macomb. They were treated as normal people in the town. The Cuninghams were also poor but they were also treated normally. All these examples of poor people being treated justly show that there was justice between the rich and the poor.
During the course of the book I have discovered that there have been many incidents of unjustness, which shows us that there were a lot of issues with tolerance at the time.

Justice is fairness. That is the easiest definition I can give for the term justice. Justice can also mean the principle of righteousness that like cases should be treated alike. Synonyms for the word justice include equity, impartiality, reasonableness, honesty and integrity. Overall, justice is a good thing. However, justice has sometimes not been applied to many people, in both historical times and contemporary times.
ReplyDeleteIn historical times, for example the time that the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” is set in, justice did not apply equally to numerous people. In terms of the rich and the poor, I do not think those people were treated as equals and I don’t think they were given the same rights. I believe this because in the novel, the Ewells were disliked by the richer community in Maycomb since the Ewells were pretty poor. The Ewells were not even accepted in society! Fortunately, I believe that in modern times there is slightly more fairness among the rich and the poor. The poor is accepted in society, however, they are not treated as equals to the rich.
I do not believe that justice applies equally to the whites and the non-whites, both in historical times and modern-day times. There is plenty of evidence that whites and non-whites are not treated fairly, in the novel. In “To Kill a Mockingbird”, Tom Robinson is convicted of rape and so he his sent to jail. However, there was no evidence to show he did rape Mayella Ewell. In fact there was loads of evidence that proved he did not commit rape. The only reason that he did get charged with rape was because he had black skin, and Mayella plus the jury had white skin. That is evidence of racism at that time. Luckily, the amount of racism has decreased since the time that the novel was set in. An example is that at I.S.K. there is hardly any racism and we live as one big happy community (hopefully!). On the other hand, outside of that school, there are still a lot of race issues around the world.
If anyone thinks that justice applies equally between the socially prominent and the social outcasts they are utterly mislead. The socially prominent always are better off than the social outcasts because people in the community do not let the social outcasts have their say in whatever the community is up to. The social outcasts have been marginalized from society. Those events occurred in both historical times and occur in contemporary times. An example from “To Kill a Mockingbird” that proves my statements correct is that the Cunninghams are social outcasts and they are not treated well by the Maycomb society.
I think that man and woman are treated fairly in contemporary times; however, they were not treated fairly in historical times. Man was always thought to have been superior to woman in historical times, and so man was given more privileges than woman. An example from the novel that shows one of these privileges is that in Maycomb, women were not allowed to be in the jury and all of the high officials were men. Fortunately, several acts have brought man and woman back to level terms. Women are now even allowed to be presidents of a country!
Justice between adults and children is also unequal in both time periods. In both time periods children are not given the same rights as adults. Children are not allowed to vote in both time periods.
In conclusion, I believe that equal rights have not been given to the rich and the poor, the whites and the non-whites, the socially prominent and the social outcasts and finally the adults and the children. On the other hand, I do believe that justice is applied equally to man and woman nowadays.

Opening thought on To Kill a Mockingbird..............
ReplyDeleteTo me the word justice means fairness, especially in the way people are treated. Justice should be distributed equally toward the rich, the poor, the white, the non white, the socially prominent, the social outcast, the males the females, the adult and the child. I think of it this way because everyone is equal no matter who they are. Unfortunately over the centuries justice has not been equally distributed among everyone.
The rich get more advantages than the poor in the real world. The reason why I say this is because rich people obviously have more power and influence over people than poor people do. Someone who is poor can work harder than a rich man to get somewhere and the rich man would still get the better of it. An example of this is that a kid can be born into a rich family and become rich later on without even trying to work hard in school. And a poor person can work exceedingly well in school and still stay poorer than a rich person later on in life.
I think that now a day’s justice is almost applied equally over all races, white or black. But in the past justice was horridly distributed among the white and the blackes. If a black person was accused of a crime by a white person the jury would always convict the black person as guilty. An example of this is in the book to kill a Mockingbird when Tom Robinson (a black man) gets purposely, falsely accused guilty by a White Man of raping a girl. Another example of injustice shown towards black people was that in the early 1900s in the states black people had to sit in the back of the bus where white people could sit in the front.
There was also an injustice towards social outcasts compared to socially prominent people that is displayed in the book. An example of this occurrence is when Aunt Alexandra meets up with her friends and talks badly about the social outcast. But then she talks well about the socially prominent.
Another form of injustice is that females in the past where not treated equally as a comparison to men. Until the 1930s women were not allowed to vote, which most of been very degrading towards them. In the past women were also not allowed to do certain jobs. They were made to stay at home and be a housewife or have very low paying forms of work.
The last form of injustice that is shown in the book to Kill a Mockingbird is that adults are seen as higher than children. I find this acceptable due to the fact that children have not fully matured yet or have the same intelligence level as an adult. In contrast children now a days have more rights than they did in the past. I find though that injustice towards children should only be taken to a certain level.
In conclusion, I have found out that there are a lot more cases of injustice than I have ever thought there was. I think this book reflects on the amount of ignorance and intolerance their has been in the past.

ReplyDeleteI think that justice is doing the right thing even if it will not be well looked upon by others. It is doing the right thing, even if others are going to stand in your way, and make it as hard as possible. However, justice is not always given. If it is given, it is not given equally to one group as it is to another. There are several examples where this stands true.
ReplyDeleteOne example is the relationship between the rich and the poor. Justice was not given to some of the poorer folks in the book. An example is with Walter Cunningham. Walter Cunningham was one of the poorer people that went to the same school as Scout. Walter Cunningham is not able to afford a lunch because he does not have enough money. He also cannot go to the doctor for his tapeworm problem. He was offered money for lunch from the teacher, but was expected to pay her back. He did not have the money to pay her back, so the money was not taken. I think if justice was served, she would have just given him the money, and not ask him to pay her back.
Another example of justice not being served is the relationship between whites and the non-whites. An example was the Tom Robinson case. Even though Tom Robinson was innocent, they still made him go to jail. There was no evidence showing him guilty, but that’s how they ruled the court case. If justice was supposed to be served, then he would have been set free. They would have seen the evidence showing nothing against his accusation, and set him off a free man.
Another example of justice not being served was the relationship between the socially prominent, and the social outcast. An example of this is the mixed children in the book. The mixed kids are outcast because no one wants them. The whites don’t want part of them because they are part black, and the blacks don’t want them because they’re part white. They only have their family and themselves. They should not be looked at as outcast; they should be accepted for who they are. That’s how justice would be served for them.
The relationship between women and men are another example how justice was not served. An example is how women were not allowed to be a part of the jury. Atticus talks about how they would stop to ask too many questions to be on the jury. They are told that women are not capable of performing that task. They should have been able to perform the task if they felt like doing so, and not be treated like they were incapable of doing it.
The relationship between adults and children is the last example on how justice is not served. An example of this how they think little girls should act. They thought that kittle girls had to be very delicate. People in the book believed they should stay at home and be housewives. Scout was more of a tomboy, and many adults in the book did not like that. They should have let her be just the way she was.
In conclusion, justice was not served equally at that time period. Many different groups like whites and the rich was given much more justice than the people that desvered it, like the poor and the black. This is not shown to the same dr]egree in our time now, but is still a large part of history.
To me I would like to think that “Justice” means ethical, right, fair and honorable. Justice is an honorable implement. However justice does not always applied to every one. It wasn't applied to every one back then and even now.
ReplyDeleteIn the old days for example like in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, justice was not applied to many different people. For example the rich and the poor. Like the Cunningham’s weren't treated as fair as others because they were poor. They were not given the same right or the same rules. Another example would be the Ewells. The Ewells were hated on pretty much by every one because they were poor and they were unclean they weren't polite and as civilized as the others in Maycomb Alabama. They were not accepted. However now in Society there is a big difference and the rich are still rich they still do have some advantages. However the poor are accepted in society and they are treated as kindly as possible.
I personally think that justice was not applied equally to the withes and the non-whites historically. I think so because In the novel the black were looked down on there were different rules that hey had to follow. Segregated places were created because of the blacks. i personally think it is ridiculous because every person should be treated the same no matter what we are human beings and we should all be treated equally. However this statement was not made in the novel To Kill a mockingbird. An example would be when Tom Robinson was taken to court he was still put in jail even though he was not guilt of doing anything. Also Mayella Ewell did not have any proof that he had raped her. However back then a white man’s word was taken over bye a black man’s word therefore this shows that justice does not apply to both whites and non-white. In today’s world i do not think that there is as much racism as there was back in the time Harper Lee wrote this novel. The world has become more diverse. For example there are still some places around the world that still have that still have some race problems.
Justice is not equally applied to the social prominent and the social outcast. The prominence are always much likely to work better as a community without having to have outcasts with them. The social outcasts are always left out of whatever the community has decided to do. They are always unwanted therefore this shows that justice has not been equally applied among the socially prominent and the outcasts.
When it comes to justice among children and adults, i personally think that they are both uneven at times. It is basically because there are some things that adults can do and that children cant do and there are somethings that children can do but adults can. Therefore this proves that when it come to adults and children justice can be fair on both sides but at different times.
I personally think that both men and women are treated equally around the world therefore justice is applied among both genders at times. For example in the country of Saudi Arabia parts of it. Women are not allowed to drive they are not allowed to wear clothing that does not cover their shoulders. There are any things that women are not allowed to do. However in historical times justice was not applied to both men and women equally. For example back then the women were not allowed to vote. An example from the novel was that the women were not allowed to be in the jury and the men were allowed to be. But now if you look around you women are capable of many things for example allowed to vote become presidents and many other things.
The term justice is hard to explain. I suppose I would say that justice is the fair prosecution of a guilty man, if that makes any sense at all. Correct me if I am wrong but I think that justice plays a role in every single constitution all over the world. I believe that everyman no matter what they have or have not done is entitled to justice. The rich and the poor will never have fair trials if they are facing each other in court. Especially in countries like Kenya, corruption is a huge issue here. If there is ever any sort of dispute between the rich and the poor, it will be solved by the rich paying off the judge and sometimes even the jury. A poor man does not have more power than a rich man and never will with the post industrial-revolution economy. In modern times justice is found throughout the races. In most places it does not matter your ethnicity, especially in court. There are very few exceptions to this rule. I can only think of two that pop out to me. An American war prisoner in Iraq or Iran will not be given a fair trial. Any person of colour in a Klu-Klux-Klan dominated town where even the judge may be a member of the KKK will not be given a fair trial. In these two examples it is easy to see that justice will never be served. The fight for justice is highly unlikely to occur with the socially prominent and outcasts. For example if a rapper or famous athlete commits murder or any other heinous crimes they will probably get the minimum sentence possible because they are the elite of society. But if a homeless person is found guilty of murder, death will be the likely sentence. Now this next question is the one I think I have the most trouble wrapping my head around. I believe that the world is biased in favour of females, thus justice is also biased in favour of females. In my humble opinion I believe it is just easier to believe that a male has done something evil, than to believe that a female has done something equally bad. I feel that in a case where it is male against female the latter will always outsmart the male and get him into trouble. So justice for male and females is not possible because of two simple facts: 1) A bias in favour of the female. 2) The females outwit the males, so they end up victorious. Finally the one that is the hardest to cope with, adult and child, I do not believe that these two groups will ever have fair justice. There is a simple explanation for that. The adults were once children, as children they were told to respect authority and that adults are superior to children. Every generation that gets passed on and there is no stopping it because everyone wants to feel superior.
ReplyDeleteIn conclusion…….
Justice is highly unlikely at different levels of society.
The meaning of justice to me is to be fair during a court trial. To give whomever is being accused an equal judgement and to treat them fairly without any corrupt views. What I mean here about corrupt views is that in To Kill A Mockingbird the judge and the jurors would all be white and would condemn only the non-white people even if they were not in the wrong.
ReplyDeleteToday it seems like that justice amongst rich people and the poor is way out of line. If in a trial against one another the rich man or woman can probably bribe the judge and the jurors into his/her favour. Corruption affects all events involving the rich and the poor.
Nowadays justice amongst the white and the non-white is quite fair. Of course there is the variable of bribery but I think that racism is now out of court. But back during the time of segregation the black man had to chance even if he was not in the wrong. During that time period the white people would get off easy. Like the Emmett Till incident. The murderers of the young boy were not charged with murder even though plenty of evidence led to those two men. This shows how bad the racism was back then. Views like that corrupted the minds of people that would be good.
When it comes to those that are social outcasts they are usually treated unfairly because they have different views from others. They are outcasts because of their views and all it gets them is insult when they walk down the road. From reading other books I noticed this happened a lot with scientists that have a breakthrough to provide new explanations for phenomenon on Earth. Their ideas are usually laughed at and the public ignore it. Those ideas would be considered preposterous and thrown in the trash like spoiled milk. Meanwhile those who follow the ideas of the past do so because they think it is safe and those that are religious say other ideas are a threat to what God has given to the Earth. This is just what I have noticed when reading the biographies of scientists.
Males and females probably got a fair trial a long time ago during the time of piracy. Like the story of Anne Bonny and Mary Read the two female pirates. Whey they were eventually caught they were to be condemned to death for their crimes. But were pardoned because of pregnancy. I think justice was shown here, they did wrong and were to die but since they were to have babies they got to live. Also today if women do something wrong they are given a chance to go to court and they are sent to jail if they were found guilty, just like men.
With adults and children justice is sometimes present. I think this is so because is the child's explanation of something is totally unbelievable then he/she will be given a punishment but however the child cannot punish what the adult does wrong so I cannot really tell if justice is really present all the time with adults and children.
As time passed justice has appeared and disappeared. The time when justice disappeared was the time of racial inequality. But as time passed justice has returned and there still might be problems but it is improving drastically.

ReplyDeleteI honestly think that justice should apply to everyone of those things listed. But unfortuneatly in the book "To Kill A Mocking Bird" it didn't apply to everyone. Justice to me means equality to everyone, rights, and to be fair. Justice wasn't served a lot back then and even in some parts in the world it still isn't served.
ReplyDeleteJustice is not applied equally to the rich and the poor. First of all the rich will always be below the poor and will always work for them. The rich will have everything whereas the poor will have nothing. The rich will ignore the poor and only focus on their own insecurities and what they should buy next. The poor will appreciate what they have and be thankful maybe to even be alive. Justice will always be served better to the rich than the poor. We live in a world where money is a huge part of our lives and with it you have more of an advantage with people without it.
Back then people were judged by their skin color and their was segregation (Jim Crow Laws). The white were treated better because of their light skin. The black people were compared to dirt because their brown skin so therefore they had to be treated very badly. Even if a white person wasn't rich like the Ewells in "To Kill A Mocking Bird" you would still be treated better than a black person. If you were black back then that was the worst thing anyone could be because they were treated as animals in so many ways. The worst part of this is that in some areas its still going on. Justice was always served to the whites.
The social prominent will always be treated better than the social outcast. This rule applies today for example if a celebrity goes to jail they will be out as soon as the any of the other people in jail there because one: they have money and two: a celebrity never stays in jail for long. For example Paris Hilton. Also in schools you have the popular kids and the outcasts the popular people will always be social and get invited to parties whereas the outcasts will be ignored.
Males will always think that they are stronger smarter and more hardworking than females. For example in "To Kill A Mockingbird" you would hardly find the women with jobs the men would work as farmers or lawyers like Atticus and his relatives and the women would stay at home have book clubs and cook. That's what a woman's role has always been even today. But it's good that things have changed now because we wouldn't be able to be doing some of the things we do today like play football and where trousers.
People will always treat adults with more respect than children. For example Mrs. Dubose was kinder to Atticus than to Jem and Scout because he was an adult. Also today if you go to a restaurant some of the waitresses will put more money on the bill just because your a kid and they think you can't count. Justice will always be served more to adults than to kids.
What's worse about this is that it's all true.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, i would say justice is the equality and fairness between two individuals or a group of people. Justice isn't just a simple word, but it also applies to our actions.I we take a look at our world of today, the rich way of life is completely different from the poors. The rich are treated with more respect than the poor when it comes to various of things. This brings me to the Cunnigham and Ewell family in the poor, that aren't even considered as part of Maycomb's Society!
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to skin color, the novel provided us with a number of reasons in which injustice was the main cause and reason. In my opinion, i would say the whole context of this book was based on the idea of racism and had a similar story to the scottsboro boys trial, which was a very sad story. The novel shows how Atticus is frowned upon simply because he decides to defend people of a darker skin shade. This leads to Scout and Jem being teased at school and even by Mrs. Dubose and their own aunt Alexandra, saying their father is putting the Finch name to shame. I wouldn’t say this is fair, as Jem and Scout shouldn’t be treated as such simply because of Atticus’ job and what he does to protect others.
In the case of social classes, i would say people who are different, not at all like everyone else are the people cast as outcasts. In todays society people are classed depending on what they have and how much of it they own. Therefore, the people that have less or nothing at all are the outcasts. It is quit obvious that men are given a lot more justice than women, seeing as they are " stronger" than us. The men are also known as the dominant species is in a family, which is why they believe they should be treated with such respect. However, just because a man “wears the pants” in a relationship doesn’t mean he has the right to hurt or abuse his wife or daughter, as myella is the example in the book, who is actually being abused by her own father rather than Tom Robinson who was accused, and later on killed!
Without adults, the children wouldn't even be alive, so i think it is fair that adults are granted more justice. However, a child should be free to speak their mind, and in To Kill A Mockingbird, i would say scout isn't given an opportunity to do that when it comes to Aunt Alexandra, who doesn't support the direction in which her life is heading one bit. Scout was brought up by a man, with calpurnia as the only female, so when it comes to her acting as a tom boy, it should be nothing but expected.
Injstice still goes own in our everyday lives, and i believe it should be reasoned through fairness and equality, giving both parties a benifit. An individual or group of people shouldn’t be preferred over another simply because of race, gender, social class and other reasons. Therefore, no matter what, except in the case of children and adults, I would say people should be treated the same and given the same rights as eachother.
Justice means to be fair and reasonable. It means that people should be treated equally and not put down by their race, features, or anything else. In the time of the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" I do not think there was justice between the rich and the poor. The rich obviously had more advantages than the poor did. A good example of this would be the Ewells. They were not treated equally in the society compared to other people. If you fast-forward to today, there is more justice between the rich and poor than there was at the time of the book "To Kill a Mockingbird".
ReplyDeleteI also do not think that there was justice between the whites and non-whites during the time of this novel. I say this because non-whites had separate rules that they had to follow, and they could not do what whites could do. Everywhere had to be separated; one side for whites and others for non-whites. A good example from the book "To Kill a Mockingbird" of why there was no justice between whites and non-whites would be when Tom Robinson is accused to raping a white woman, and is sent to jail (to be executed), even though there was a lot of evidence that proved he was innocent. But just because he was black, and also because the jury was just white men, he was quickly found guilty. Today, there is not as much racism as there was before, but it is still being practiced in some places around the world.
I also do not think that there is justice between the socially prominent and the social outcast during the time of the book. People just do not let social outcast decide in anything that the community is deciding on.
There was also no justice between the male and female during the time of "To Kill a Mockingbird". The men were always given more privileges than the women, and they were supposedly "higher in status" than women. Did you notice that in the book, there were no female jury members? Well there weren't and I think that is a good example to show how men had more privileges than women at that time. But that has now changed, and today, I believe women are now treated more equally than they were back then. Women can now vote, and be a part of the government, and are free to do what men can also do.
I also believe that there was no justice between adults and children. Children weren't allowed to do almost everything adults could do, and I believe that is the same as today. Children cannot do a lot of things adults can do. A good example would be being president, or even voting! Children will never be treated with the same respect as adults, and that is a fact.
I believe that today, there is still not enough justice between the rich and poor, the white and non-whites, the socially prominent and social outcasts, and adults and children. But I do believe that there is now justice between the males and females.
Opening Thoughts to kill a mocking bird.
ReplyDeleteJustice to me means fairness and everyone being treated equally is a man or a female, a rich or a poor, a child or an adult or even the socially prominent or a social outcast. Justice should be served to everyone no matter what color his skin is what sex he is where he or she lies in the social standings. These factors should not determine the amount of justice one should receive because everyone should receive the same. Justice is fairness and equality and I feel as if it is something everyone should get the same amount off. People usually determine these factors when it comes to justice and I feel as if this is the wrong thing to do because everyone is a human no one is better than the other and no one deserves to be treated as the second hand.
In the book Tom Robinson is a black man who is accused of rape. He knew that he didn’t commit it and he in his heart knew he was innocent. There was physical evidence that depicted that Tom Robinson was innocent but the factor that determined injustice was the color if his skin. He was a black man being tested and judged in a white jury in a country that was suffering from segregation in favor of the whites. Tom Robinson didn’t receive the amount of justice and fairness that a white human being was receiving because in South Alabama at the time of segregation, a time where justice was served according to skin color.
This was very unfair towards Tom Robinson and this was not the only case where justice was served unfairly in the Novel. Tom Robinson couldn’t react to the situation because he knew even if he questioned the judge he would get even more severe punishment. Tom Robinson was a man that died of innocence and he is a prime example of the term to kill a mocking bird.
Justice is a good reflection on what a good society should be. It is an act of principal and equitableness. Overall when a person looks at the word justice he or she should also understand what kind of effects it places on their society. Including the rich and poor, the white and non white, the socially prominent and the social outcast, the male and female and also the adults and kids. The time period in which the novel To Kill a Mockingbird took place showed that the act of justice was shown through different aspects.
ReplyDeleteIn the novel to kill a mockingbird, when the rich and the poor are looked at, a drastic difference in status could be witnessed. First of all the rich were treated like royalty and the poor like garbage. This can easily be understood because everybody likes a man with money. An example of a mistreated poor family were the Ewells, they were treated like public enemy no.1. I could probably understand why because they weren’t the best of people to be around. In present time I still believe there is still some mistreatment among the rich and poor, but not to the magnitude of the situation in which the novel took place in. This probably is because the idea of justice has been taken more seriously than before.
When it comes to racial background, justice is not important because it is not used in a proper manner to help solve this issue. This I believe is due to the poor laws that were used during our time and theirs. In the novel to kill a mockingbird race was an issue that wasn’t taken seriously. This was mostly due to the acts of the Jim Crow laws, which brought segregation between the races. The whites lived a good life and were fine with the laws, because they didn’t affect them in any way shape or form in a negative way. Everything they got in life was better than ones of the blacks, people were also more lenient with any of the issues that affected them and this was all due to the idea that whites were superior to all other races. An example of this was during the Tom Robinson case. He was accused of rape, but any strong comments he made to try deny any of the allegations were of no effect. In today’s world racism is a problem, many people try to address the problem but there is not much of an effect.
In society, the socially prominent are looked up to and the social outcast the opposite. These people are the ones that stick out and help out the society, and that is why they are of such great importance. They are conspicuous and also widely and favorably known. They are normally valedictorians and that is why they get accepted with open arms. The social outcasts are not treated as fairly as the socially prominent because they are the depressed ones and have no future. Who would like to respect somebody with no future and I can understand why they were not as widely accepted as the successful. The social outcasts should literally be outcasted from society if they are not willing to work hard.
I believe men were treated more fairly in the past and still believe there is still a bit of an advantage. In the past the men received more privileges than the women. This could be proven in the novel as the men had higher status in their work. In present time I still believe it’s similar because many of the diplomats are men, and also men are most of the time the ones who run the family.
It is obvious that the adults had more rights than the kids in the past and present. An example is their right to drive and vote.
In conclusion it is understood that justice brought a lot of advantages to society but at the same time in some cases was not used to its full potential.
